The Two Routes

Electronic Submission or a Physical Card

Out of state applications resolve to one of two answers, and the receiving agency decides which:

Electronic submission. Some states accept an electronic transmission from an out of state provider, routed under the ORI number the agency gives you. Florida FDLE is the clearest example, which is why it has its own page.

FD-258 cards by mail. Most out of state boards cannot receive a Kansas electronic submission, so they ask for physical FD-258 cards mailed in with your packet. We roll the cards, quality check them and hand them over with an envelope and printed mailing labels.

If your instruction letter does not make it obvious which one applies, bring it in or read it to us over the phone. Guessing wrong here costs a full set of prints and several weeks.

Common Out of State Reasons

  • Nursing or medical license in another state
  • Multistate nurse licensure compact applications
  • Teaching certification in a new state
  • Real estate, insurance or securities licensing
  • Relocating and transferring an existing license
  • Remote employees hired by an out of state company
  • Adoption, immigration and visa packets
  • Overseas police certificate requests

Bring These

  • Current government issued photo ID
  • The instruction letter or application packet
  • Any ORI number or agency code supplied
  • Blank FD-258 cards if the agency mailed you some
  • The exact name spelling on your application
Take a spare card. Two cards cost $55 instead of $35 for one. If the agency loses one in the post, or a second board asks later, a spare saves you an entire repeat appointment.

Questions

Out of State Fingerprinting FAQs

In almost all cases yes. What matters is the format the agency asked for and, for electronic submissions, the correct ORI number. Fingerprints themselves are not state specific.
The requesting agency decides. Their letter usually says either "submit electronically using ORI number..." or "return two completed FD-258 cards with your application". If it is ambiguous, call us and read it out, or call the board directly before you book.
We supply the envelope with printed mailing labels, but you post it, because most agencies want the cards inside your own application packet. If your agency accepts third party submission, tell us when you book.
Electronic submissions typically return in 1 to 72 hours. Mailed cards depend entirely on the receiving agency and commonly take several weeks. If speed matters, ask whether they will accept an electronic route.
Yes, and it is worth doing in one visit. Bring all three instruction letters and we will take the right combination of cards and electronic submissions in a single appointment.
Yes, and it is one of our most requested. See Florida live scan fingerprinting for the FDLE Level 2 process.
